TOEIC Story 6 – Love

Love was like the economy: unpredictable, liable to fluctuate without warning. In a small, private cafe nestled on a cobblestone street in the heart of the city, two lovers sat in silence, their love a presentation of what had once been, and what had now definitely soured. The distribution of smiles had plummeted, and the complaint department of their relationship was thriving.

They used to cruise through life together, their love the anchor in their stormy sea. Their early days were filled with laughter and adventure, an economy of love that was booming. But now, it was as stable as a slump in the stock market. The payment of affection was past due, and maintenance had been neglected for too long. Their love had turned into a rare relic of what it used to be.

She, with an ambitious heart, tried to fill out the gaps with sweet gestures and romantic surprises, but it was too late. Their love was in a cold refrigerator, with the dial set to freezing. The liability of their actions weighed heavily on both of them.

He had an opportunity to make amends, to regulate their relationship, to plug in the missing pieces. But his motivation was missing, and he was drowning in indifference. They both sat in silence, an audience of two, unable to find a respectful way to communicate.

Their love, once a shining example of what it meant to be in love, was now an indication of their mistake, a bitter taste of love turned sour.

“Is this it, then?” she finally broke the silence, her voice barely more than a whisper.

He looked at her, searching for words that could save what was left. “I don’t know,” he admitted, his shoulders slumping. “Maybe it is.”

As they parted ways, there was no need for a confirmation. It was over. The department of love had closed its doors, and their love budget had been spent, leaving them with nothing but a folder full of memories and a feeling of lost opportunity. Hemingway would have approved of their love story, short and bittersweet, leaving them to navigate the economy of their own hearts, as it always does, with its ups and downs.
