Reading Passages

Passage 1: A Trip to the ATM Turns into Trouble Questions 1-5

Last Saturday, Sarah stopped by an ATM near her home to withdraw some cash before going shopping. She inserted her card and entered her PIN. The machine made some sounds, but then nothing happened. She waited for a moment and tried again, but the screen went blank. Then, without warning, the machine ejected her card and showed an error message.

Worried, Sarah checked her bank app and saw that money had been withdrawn—even though she never received any cash. She immediately called the bank’s customer service line. The representative told her that the machine may have had a technical issue and they would investigate the transaction. He also reassured her that if there was a mistake, the money would be returned within three business days.

Sarah felt frustrated, but she was glad she had checked her app right away and reported the issue.

Passage 2: Remembering the Old Dial-Up Internet Questions 6-9

Before smartphones and Wi-Fi, people used dial-up internet to go online. It worked through a telephone line, and users had to connect their computers with special modems. The connection was slow and noisy—the modem made a series of beeps and buzzes before finally going online.

Because dial-up used the phone line, people couldn’t use the phone and the internet at the same time. If someone picked up the phone while you were online, the connection would be lost. Downloading a single picture could take several minutes, and streaming videos was almost impossible.

Despite these limitations, many people still have fond memories of dial-up. It was the beginning of a new digital world, and for many families, the first time they could explore the internet at home.

Passage 3: Lost in Taipei Questionis 10-14

When James visited Taipei for the first time, he was excited to explore the city. After getting off the MRT at Ximen Station, he decided to walk around and take photos. He didn’t realize how far he had walked until he looked up and saw only unfamiliar signs. He reached for his phone, but the battery was dead.

He tried asking for directions, but he didn’t speak much Chinese, and many people didn’t speak English. Feeling worried, he finally entered a small store and pointed to a picture of the MRT map he had printed earlier. A kind shop owner smiled and showed him how to get back.

James was relieved when he saw the MRT station again. He learned the importance of staying aware of his location—and keeping his phone charged.
